While a gas plant may last for years... it requires gas to convert to electricity ... this also costs money - as you say, CAPEX is only part of the equation... question would then become - which would cost more??? gas or replacement batteries?
very certain that the cost per Mw of supply to charge a battery will be much less than what gas can produce at... plus it allows the operator to time the discharge into market also... profitability will be assured, plus FCAS income is currently very lucrative for BESS systems.
Cost of gas has a big impact on the price that gas plants will bid into the NEM... from a 2018 ACCC investigation conducted by Houston Kemp
"Our analysis indicates that, on a short term basis, a $1/GJ change in short term
gas price would lead to monthly average changes in wholesale energy price
from $0.3/MWh to $3.60/MWh in NSW, and from $0.66/MWh to $11/MWh in SA"
