Yep, there are so many more creative ways of producing electricity than burning coal. That's really the point. Some will be better and some will be worse. Some will work and some will be considered duds and through that failure we'll learn what works, what doesn't and what is actually a better outcome for the environment than burning coal.
The price for renewable energy is already beating coal hence why AGL assets are already semi-stranded and share price has tanked. Over the past decade solar has become substantially more efficient and cheaper. It just makes financial sense as much as anything else to pursue these types of projects. I understand some of the environmental arguments against massive solar farms, but one thing Australia has a lot of is sun and desert, desert which is perhaps the least environmentally destructive place to put many panels. I'm simply thinking in general terms of possibilities for Australia's largest electricity producer vs the head in the sand approach that is going on now. AGL needs some fresh thinking, fresh board and management who are excited about the possibilities of change.
