"What happened"?
They never respected the risk you were taking as a shareholder because those making the decisions were not significant (for their own net wealth) shareholders....
In other words, they never had significant skin in the game.
Those that originally had some exposure were given it as "free carry" (appreciation given to Ralom for that explanation...).
So basically they couldn't care less "what happened"...they could afford to take extraordinary business risks with your capital, and run a loose governance ship, because essentially it wasn't a significant (for them) amount of their own hard earned money.
As long as they could raise money to keep the dream flowing....their version of the dream, with their version of what they believed was the correct execution,...that's all they cared about...
