Yeah, apparently BEX was pretty popular - mainly because (and they found this out later) the primary ingredient, phenacetin, was highly addictive and was linked to kidney desease.
But people were tougher back then. Even the school monkey bars were twenty foot off the ground and had a decent slab of concrete to catch you when you fell. Nowdays, 3 foot 6 with rubber compound to bounce off.
Perhaps it is the younger, woke generation now buying MAY, and expecting an update every five minutes.
