Basically, you have to walk around saying, "Bonjour. Je m'appelle Adam. Je suis australien." If you do that, they will treat you very well. They like Australians. We are exotic in that good sort of way. There are about 40k French people in Australia, but only about 4k Australians in France. We are hot commodities there. I will speak French at at an advanced intermediate level by the time I move there, so that will be enough.

The crime in Montpellier is about average for French cities... most of the drugs come through Marseille instead. Marseille has a big crime problem and there are neighbourhoods there that you wouldn't go to at night. You probably wouldn't go there alone during the day, either.
