I would be surprised if Rex purchased Air North given my assumption they won’t have the spare cash to do so. Air North has been for sale for awhile now so assume Bristow Helicopters price expectations are too high.
You do pose an interesting question DalyWaters about what aircraft Rex’s future regional fleet will comprise. Surely the Saab 340’s must be moving closer to the end of their economic lives. There are plenty of their routes that wouldn’t support aircraft with greater than 34 seat capacity. While you could operate a 50 seater (Dash 8-200 or ATR 42) at possibly a lower ASK cost, unless you can attract more passengers that is not much use. No point in cannonballising higher per seat revenue to grow the market.
I can’t see the Rex golden triangle services working, so probably a decision for another operator after a fire sale of the regional flying business.
