Lakes close to spudding another Wombat well
Tuesday, 13 October 2009
LAKES Oil expects to start drilling the Wombat-4 tight gas well, the first well to be drilled in the Wombat field, onshore Gippsland Basin, with the benefit of 3D seismic, later this week.
The well, which will be drilled on a site selected from the 2008 Wombat 3D seismic survey, was scheduled to be drilled in September, however Lakes said this was held back as further approvals were required.
In a statement this morning, the company said the rig had arrived onsite and final preparations were in progress to spud the well later this week.
Wombat-4 will be drilled to evaluate the Latrobe Group, which lies above the traditional Strzelecki target and has a separate closure from the greater Wombat structure, opening up the possibility that hydrocarbons could be trapped in the Latrobe.
The company said the Latrobe structure was bounded by major faulting giving the opportunity for migration from below.
The company added it would test the zone once the well has been cased and completed.
