…and thus begins the real political infight
Naalakkersuisut makes the economic cake smaller with the proposal. This means that raw materials and mineral exploration will not be a mainstay of business for the Self-Government.Siumut's chairman Erik Jensen is clear in his speech about Naalakkersuisut's new proposal, which in principle intends to reintroduce zero tolerance for uranium. A zero tolerance that was lifted in 2013 and which has since been a huge stone in the shoe of Greenlandic politics. The opposition's largest party, Siumut, was behind the repeal and criticized the Naalakkersuisut for leading a zigzag course in raw material policy to the detriment of the industry and Greenland's reputation with investors.- Greenland does not need a zigzag course in relation to abroad. Initiating raw material activities here is expensive. The Mineral Resources Act secures jobs and tax dollars for Greenland. We need that for a self-sustaining economy, says Erik Jensen.Whether Siumut will repeal the new law when and if the party regains power, however, is too early to say, according to the party chairman.- We have not yet discussed it in the party. So it has not been decided yet, says Erik Jensen, who states that he has convened a strategy seminar in September.GE: Tangles expropriationThe Greenland Chamber of Commerce sees two main problems with the bill against uranium, says head of secretariat and legal consultant Karsten Lyberth Klausen.Firstly, it will have a negative effect on the investment climate, as the proposal creates uncertainty about the framework for investing in mineral exploration in Greenland. In this connection, GE refers in particular to paragraphs 2 and 3, which give the Naalakkersuisut the right to ban other radioactive elements as well as the possibility to restrict or revoke permits granted for feasibility studies, exploration and exploitation.
