The Maritime Union of Australia is reportedly seeking an injunction to stall Asciano Limited’s (ASX:AIO) plans to automate its cargo terminal at Port Botany.

The ports and rail operator announced its intention to cut 270 jobs from its Port Botany workforce by 2014 to be replaced by automated technology.

The re-development is aimed at boosting capacity to meet current trade growth forecasts.

The union claims Asciano’s subsidiary Patrick stevedores was in breach of the consultation clause of enterprise bargaining agreements, however a spokesperson for the company says it had met its legal obligations in relation to consulting.

In the 2012 financial year, Asciano reported a net profit of $242.7 million."
