China burns around 3.2 billion tonnes of coal a year but only 267million tonnes are imported. Chinas coal mines are inland and their rail sysyem has been unable to carry the full amount to the coast however they have been upgrading their rail system . This has caused a drop off in demand for imported coal. They also have a vigourous programme of increasing the use of renewables if they acheive the target of 18.4% energy from these sources by 2025 they will have no need to import coal.
