I’d love to see BHP and RIO merge. I remember the merger pre GFC failing very well. It’s unlikely to get regulatory approval, plus the issue of chinas holding in RIO blocking it.

If China tried to get too much power in minerals space this would be the ultimate entity to deal with it: BHP/RIO as one. The synergies and cost savings would be incredible too. Dare say spin out the aluminium business if it were to occur.

The re rating and synergies would probably get the company into top 10 or 20 of listed companies by market cap size globally. Mind you BHP was top 10 back in 2000s before the emergence of mega cap tech and the US bull run.
