You can always point out that fossil fuels are also 'free' ,in the sense that they are just there at no cost in the ground. However, it does take a lot of cash to find, extract, process and transport them, in the same way catching the rain or wind costs to concentrate their energy. Hydro dams and giant wind turbines are sadly quite expensive and not without their own environmental impact.
