Shale gas has been produced for years from shales with natural fractures. Shale gas with natural fractures is a conventional source of hydrocarbons. The Gothic Shale Formation has natural fractures and as a result is capable of flowing natural gas. It can be considered a rich source of hydrocarbons, given the fact that Shales with economic quantities of gas are rich in organic material.

Unconventional Shale gas is Shale which does not have natural fractures and requires artificial fracturing. Hence the horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing.
