GENEVA, July 17 (Reuters) - The European Union called on China on Wednesday to make reforms to end "distortive" policies such as state support for the manufacturing sector that it said was giving Beijing an unfair advantage over other countries.

"It is indispensable to examine and conduct its trade policy, as well as its domestic policies, in particular its industrial policy with a goal to minimise such negative spill-overs," said the EU envoy in a speech sent to Reuters that was delivered at a closed-door WTO review of China's trade policies.

In the same speech, the delegate asked Beijing, officially classified as a "developing" country at the WTO, to refrain from using this status to get preferential treatment intended for poorer states.
