Gold competes against the USD as a store of value and is therefore generally viewed as a hedge against falling real yields (nominal UST yield minus CPI). Gold was hammered overnight because the inflation reading remains high which increases the probability of the Fed aggressively hiking interest rates (i.e., storing wealth in bonds becomes a more attractive proposition to storing wealth in gold)
