I am a big fan of Professor Scott Galloway and the one thing he says venture funds should not do is smoke their own supply. The best firms like Sequoia try to avoid this. New external investors should lead each round to ensure the valuation is robust and the business is on the right track.
I get why FDV thinks these options are valuable and why they might want to take advantage, its not however best practice or a guarantee of a good deal.
