- Here in Östergötland it is appropriate to mine uranium, where we know that we have quite large deposits, says Östergötland Member of Parliament John Weinerhall (M).

In 2018, the then government banned the extraction of uranium in Sweden.

Through a change in the Environmental Code and the Minerals Act, it is no longer possible to obtain a permit to start a uranium mine or extract uranium from mine waste.

The reason was that in recent years there has been extensive exploration for uranium and municipalities with significant uranium deposits requested legislation to prevent uranium mining.

"Swedish uranium is in demand"

In 2019, John Weinerhall (M) motioned for a change to the mineral law.

That time it did not pass in the Riksdag.

Now they return with the same motion.

- I hope and believe that there is great interest.

And it is important that we set strict environmental requirements, and we do that best if we break this at home in Sweden.

The parties M, SD, KD and L have said that they are prepared to review the Minerals Act in order to re-authorize uranium mining in Sweden.
