I've never taken out extended warranty myself but then I usually self insure against most risks. Eg rental car excess reduction. I'm a reasonably good driver and treat rental car like it is mine, not parking in dodgy locations etc.
These ambulance chasing lawyers are a blight on the culture. Consumer law is ridiculously biased against business.
There is a value in a warranty, as it simplifies the process of claiming when there is a failure of the product.
Because most products don't fail, it will usually seem like a waste in hindsight. But there are some failures so there is value to be had rather than hiring a lawyer to pursue a claim through complex legal obligations that may or may not apply.
