Assange didn't do any "hacking". Wikileaks administered some servers in the normal fashion on which documents that had previously been leaked and published elsewhere were "mirrored". All the documents the USA is persecuting him over had been published earlier on the Cryptome site. The administrator of the Cryptome site had even filed affidavits to that effect.
