Leighton Holdings Limited (ASX:LEI) subsidiary Thiess has won a $1.8 billion contract for the construction of gas compression facilities and associated works for the QCLNG project in the Surat Basin.

The new contract expands Thiess’ role in the project, which now includes construction of all 18 field compressor stations and four central processing plants, with work to be completed by November 2014.

It replaces and significantly expands the $325 million agreement signed in February 2012 for the construction of six compressor stations and one processing plant.

Leighton Chief Executive Hamish Tyrwhitt says the enormous investments being made in to the development of coal seam gas fields and LNG in Australia is driving a diverse range of opportunities for Thiess and other companies within the Leighton Group.

Thiess is ramping up its workforce in the Surat Basin to complete the projects.

Leighton generated a net profit of $360.2 million in the first half of fiscal 2013.
