Lend Lease Group’s (ASX:LLC) controversial $6 billion Barangaroo development on Sydney’s waterfront has been criticised by Former NSW Planning Minister and Labor MP Frank Sartor.
Mr Sartor says the hotel is a categorical planning mistake, adding, that the proposed buildings are bigger than they need to be and the public domain has been diminished, with public spaces lowered in quality.
The criticism comes as an alliance of groups seeking reform of New South Wales planning laws called upon newly appointed premier Barry O’Farrell to launch a Commission of Inquiry into the development.
The group, called the Australians for Sustainable Development, says that Mr O’Farrell promised to debate in Parliament any issue that attracts 10,000 signatures, and it intends to make Barangaroo the first test of that promise.
In the first six months of the 2011 financial year Lend Lease generated a net profit of $227 million.
