The exploding transportation battery market is in such a fluid state worldwide that you have to be wary of going down the wrong rabbit hole that prevents you seeing the bigger picture. E.g. here in Brisbane alone there are several battery hopefuls but after discounting flow batteries from the mix (as they are not suitable for mobile applications), it leaves 2 contenders IMHO, Li-S and GMG. GMG battery tech is very simple, aluminium foil anode and graphite cathode, and in at least my mind, the battery is bordering on having super capacitor qualities.
This of course, raises a red flag, how is it possible that 2 Qld co's are at the very forefront of low cost cutting edge battery tech? Something in the water perhaps, or just representative of whats going on in countless cities and research labs worldwide? After all the prize is truly numbered in trillion$ to the winners, with giant companies willing to JV and able to ramp up production quickly. But putting that aside, here are the differences in performance:
Li-S Lithium Sulpher ......................................540 .................Wh/L 400
Conclusion: There may be room for both technologies (assuming L = ~1kg), Li-S for applications where weight is important such as aviation and GMG where raw discharge power is most important such as a full mining dump truck accelerating uphill, ships or certain stationary storage for grid stability situations etc.. who knows, in some situations mixed battery packs of the 2 technologies could be the solution?
