Aug 23 (Reuters) - Lynas Rare Earths (LYC) said on Monday regulators extended a deadline to satisfy the licence conditions to build a permanent disposal facility in Malaysia, and that plant operations in the country continue at reduced rates due to COVID-19-led curbs.

The Australian rare earths miner said the licensing deadline for the proposed permanent disposal facility for water leached purification residue had been extended by six months to March 2, 2022, due to virus-led constraints.

Lynas also said it received an appeal regarding a judicial review of its fourth operating licence in Malaysia, which the miner said it would defend.

The company is presently operating under a fifth operating licence granted in February last year.

The disposal of low-level radioactive waste from Lynas's Malaysian plant has been a contentious issue, and identifying a location for the permanent disposal facility was part of the requirements set by the Malaysian government when it renewed the company's licence to operate in the country.
