Don't believe everything you read in Newspapers, especially when they are coming from the UK and relate to Wembley.
Read the announcements closely, the A$300m was for Stratford AND Global Switch. Multiplex half year result disclose the profit on the Stratford transaction.
Stratford is an A$10B development (which MPX had an effective interest of 25% in). The $10B is the gross development value, not the profit. What will it cost to develop? What will happen to construction costs in the UK from now until 2012 (guide - have a look at what happened in Australia).
Perhaps Multiplex assessed the potential of the project and decided it was better to take a profit and release some capital now, rather than wait a number of years (until 2012 and beyond) to get some money.
