I believe that a number of the start ups have offices in Perth. The better time zone (same as Hong Kong)with Asian countries allows to do business easier while getting started. Giving the opportunity by 3hrs (currently) over some East Coast companies for negotiation.

Looking at SAS, there is a couple of business hours of overlap from Perth but not Sydney with Africa, Israel and Sweden. Current areas where work is being done.

Or they might just like the beaches there.
