News Corporation (ASX:NWS) has appointed Rupert Murdoch’s youngest son, James Murdoch, into the newly created position of deputy chief operating officer.

James Murdoch will move from London to New York and report to chief operating officer Chase Carey and work closely with his 80 year-old father and chairman, Rupert Murdoch.

39 year-old James Murdoch has held leading roles in the company for 15 years and is currently News Corp's chairman and chief executive for Europe and Asia.

The latest appointment has renewed speculation that James Murdoch will eventually succeed his father in the top job.

News Corporation generated a net profit of just under $1.5 billion in the first half of its 2011 financial year.
