Your'e probably right that employee safety may improve employee relations, but I might add its a legal obligation as well as the monetary benefit to the company. From my experience of large Aussie companies is that they have what I would call 'in house' insurance arrangements set up just for workers compensation claims to mitigate costs, though MXI, I think is a relatively small company and possibly hasn't the resources.
