RBA interest rate forecasts
National Australia Bank Limited’s (ASX:NAB) economic team believes the outcome of today’s board meeting is close to a 50:50 bet. NAB says April is looking likely for the RBA to ‘pull the pin’ but May might be a more preferable time for the RBA to cut rates and revise its forecasts. The bank believes it is more a matter of when rates will go down rather than ‘will they’. Shares in National Australia Bank rose 0.67 per cent on Thursday to end the shortened trading week at $38.69.
AMP Limited’s (ASX:AMP) AMP Capital says the RBA is expected to cut the cash rate by 0.25 per cent today. Chief Economist Dr Shane Oliver has conceded it is a close call but also highlighted a 21 per cent fall in the iron ore price since the RBA’s last meeting. Dr Oliver believes this adds urgency to the case for cutting rates amid a subdued outlook for growth and strong Australian dollar. Shares in AMP rose 1.08 per cent on Thursday to end the shortened trading week at $6.54.Ex-dividends
