Your concern is valid, but the nature of competition is slightly different with PME.
The best analogy I can come up with is say comparing Adobe Acrobat Reader with wordprocessing software. Just like Adobe, PME's Visage 7 is actually a reader software. Just like Adobe, it does not create the images, which is the job of specific imaging software (similar to wordprocessing software) working with specific machines (similar to scanners). RHT's Ferriscan is one example of imaging software specific to iron concentration in liver, with data generated from MRI scans.
Visage is a core operating software which allows physicians to access, in very quicktime, images contained in files of huge sizes. More importantly, it is a general reader which reads images of all sorts, ranging from organ slices, whole organs (eg kidney, liver, heart, pancrease), breast imaging, brain imaging, bone imaging, etc. These images are created via multiple different machines eg MRI, Ultrasound, CT Scans, Bio-Impedance, etcs.
PME's position, just like Adobe Acrobat Reader, is that of a general reader software embedded within the core of IT systems. Ripping it out is akin to taking out Acrobat Reader. It is difficult, disruptive and cumbersome.
Therefore, PME's position is not threatened by niche imaging players. In fact, niche imaging players strengthen their position, by diluting the relevance and power of the major equipment suppliers.
The most likely competition is of course the majors such as Siemens, Phillips, GE and Fujitsu. By and large, they generate revenue from sales of machines, mainly MRI, CT Scanners, Ultrasound, etc. It would be difficult for these players to expand time and resources to create a general reader, because this will benefit their competitors. Imagine Apple creating a software that would work with Google and Microsoft.
I am not a technical person, so the above may sound jumbled, apologies if so.
