Metz, I spent a decade in aviation. If planes are grounded, aircrew are given simulator time (which by law is valued at about half flight time) and they would be constantly grilled on an array of in-flight emergencies. They are required to perform a minimum number of check rides to stay licensed. It's actually one of the most regulated industries out there. A friend of mine, a former Emirates B-777 captain was retired in his late 50s for having 2 back-to-back high blood pressure readings. It's one of the few industries where you need to take out "Loss of employment insurance."
I never wanted to fly in the airlines, too much hassle. I had too much fun dodging roos on dirt strips. If I can't see a cricket jumping onto the wing, I ain't flying.
