My assessment is that the ACCC saw it couldn't get all the flesh and blood it was looking for, so decided to quit while it was ahead. In a way, it's a bit of a quixotic victory for the ACCC. You may remember it wanted a minimum fine of 600 million when it brought the case to light. My thought is Qantas simply dropped the ball. They had the cancellation tap on, while simply forgetting to turn the booking tap off.
The neo-Marxist media were also licking their lips at the possibility of scoring a direct hit against evil capitalism and its empire of greed.
So, today, it's a bit of a relief for Qantas while the Trotskyites are high-fiving. Well done, Comrades!
