About 150 long-haul Qantas Airways Limited (ASX:QAN) pilots have reportedly taken redundancies in the wake of suffering international operations.
A Qantas 747 captain told Fairfax Media most pilots have been discouraged by the airline’s international division only having 14 A380s.
Another captain, Barry Jackson, says even if Qantas intends to resume growth in three to five years, it might find many younger pilots on leave without pay will be unwilling to come back, while senior pilots would be long gone.
CEO Alan Joyce has previously declined to rule out redundancies. A spokesman told Fairfax the airline must be able to operate flexibly, and it’s common for airlines to temporarily reduce pilot numbers.
In the 2011 financial year Qantas reported a net profit of $249 million.
