I think you may have mis interpreted Steve?
Qantas has consulted with unions for many years re productivity.
But it doesnt matter how efficient and best practice they are, if the bean counters want to shut sumthing down they will.
Qantas had one of the best 747 heavy maintenance facilities in the world in hangar 245 in Sydney. I believe it was one or the only one in the world that could pull a 747 into millions of bits and put it back into service with no test flight.
It was shutdown in 2006 i think, the bean counters took a big bonus and now Qantas is retiring its 747s bcoz i dont think Avalon is a shadow of H245.
The same goes for the engine overhaul shop in Sydney, one of the best in the world, Now gone. Qantas sends its engines to China now, and they cant figure out why they keep blowing up? Geniouses !
Steve knows the 737 hangar in Tullamarine is one of the best in the world, so he told you all that yesterday. But in the end if QF bean counters want to closeit down they will.
I actually think there was an element of sarcasm in Steve's interview, he has beem there so many times before, but he knows the 60 day review is a smoke screen.
If QF want to shut sumtin down they will, there doesnt have to be any work practice efficiencies at all. Qantas had the the best, but its all about KPIs n bonuses now, no common sense at all.
