RBPlat seeks ways out of having to build concentrator at new mine

"Another option would be sharing a concentrator with other companies building mines in the area. These include Wesizwe Platinum, which is constructing a mine next door to Styldrift.

The benefit of sharing a concentrator is that both mines will focus on the Merensky Reef.

The large miners are increasingly mining more of the chrome-rich UG2 reef, which has a lower ratio of platinum to palladium, and as a result are always in the market for more Merensky ore for their concentrators.

It could be prudent for RBPlat to consider alternatives to building its own concentrator plant considering that the cost of such a facility is just slightly less than the market capitalisation of junior miner Aquarius Platinum.

"It just doesn’t feel right to spend that much money on a new concentrator for our business," RBPlat financial director Martin Prinsloo said. "There are various alternatives to look at and be smarter about this."

A key deciding factor in weighing these options would be the logistics, which would be the transportation of ore on dedicated roads, and environmental impact assessments.

"We are spending money on Styldrift because it’s a Merensky mine and we know there will be a premium for Merensky ore," Mr Prinsloo said. "We see upside in demand for this ore."
