Oct 23 (Reuters) - Electricity generator Meridian Energy Ltd (MEL) on Wednesday said New Zealand Aluminium Smelter owner Rio Tinto (RIO) will conduct a strategic review of the smelter and was considering several options for the site, including closure.
Meridian supplies electricity to the site, which is New Zealand's only aluminium smelter. Japan's Sumitomo Chemical Co Ltd 4005.T holds a roughly 20% stake in the smelter.
