i am a big supporter of nuclear power as I believe would cover us for the next 100 years and can be built safely nowadays
BUT
1. A small nuclear power plant which is viable for the next 50-100 years takes approx 2-3 years to build
2. takes lots of rare earths and uniques materials which are hard to source
3. The technology is way above Australia's capability so Japan would be the obvious choice to build
4. A small station which is economically viable is in the order of 1 gigawatt of power so would be the biggest supplier on the east coast. (will need a alternative supply to cover for maintenance)
BUT the biggest killer is, what government would have the political initiative to build one with all the LWNJ's in our political sphere. Just the thought of Pauline mentioning a coal fired power station brings every crackpot greenie out from hiding in a cacophony of howls. Good luck!

IMHO, gas is the answer.
