Sydney Airport Holdings Limited (ASX:SYD) passenger numbers soared in June, lifted by a surge in rugby fans from the United Kingdom and continued demands from Chinese customers.

In June, traffic increased to 2.9 million passengers, a 2.7 per cent rise on the same month last year.

International passengers grew 3.6 per cent to one million, while domestic passenger growth was up 2.4 per cent to 1.93 million.

CEO Kerrie Mather says the British and Irish Lions rugby tour increased the number of UK nationals visiting Sydney.

For international traffic, major nationality market growth came from Hong Kong, which was up 17.5 per cent, the United Kingdom, up 13.3 per cent, and China, up 11.9 per cent.

Sydney Airport produced a net profit of $158.1 million in its 2012 financial year.
