Telstra Corporation Limited (ASX:TLS) has scored a victory in court against Singapore Telecommunications Limited’s (ASX:SGT) Australian arm Optus.
Telstra, the Australian Football League (AFL) and the National Rugby League (NRL) have won their appeal against Optus's broadcasting of football and rugby league games.
The Federal Court has found Optus in copyright breach and overturned a decision made earlier this year that allowed Optus to broadcast games on mobiles and online.
A Telstra spokesperson has said the ruling ensures that sports bodies and Australian content owners are able to receive a fair return from their property.
An Optus spokesperson says the company is very disappointed and will consider its options, including an appeal.
Telstra generated a net profit of $1.5 billion for the first half of its 2012 financial year.
