Back in 2003 China's then leader, Hu Jintao, claimed that Australia was first discovered (and even settled) by China's Admiral Zheng He, in the early 1400s, long before the Europeans.
So perhaps the Chinese Navy felt they had a right to behave aggressively in Australia's Economic Zone.
Perhaps, much like Taiwan, China's current leader Mr Xi also considers our island to be part of China.
