Minerals chamber urges uranium mining rethink
11:15 AM May 20
Western Australia's mining industry says it is "philosophically wrong" to place a blanket ban on uranium mining.
The Chamber of Minerals and Energy of WA says the price for the mineral is at an all-time high and it is in demand throughout the world.
WA has two uranium reserves, one in the Northern Goldfields and another in the East Kimberley.
The State Government banned the mining of uranium in 2002.
Chamber chief executive Tim Shanahan says the issue needs to be brought to the attention of the general public.
"Western Australia's very prospective for uranium, there are a whole range of issues that surround uranium and its application for nuclear power - how that interacts with greenhouse gas emissions and various other advantages that might come from nuclear power generation is something the broader community needs to discuss," he said.
A spokeswoman for State Development Minister Alan Carpenter has previously said that under a Gallop Government there will be no uranium mining in WA.
