I admit my observation comes from noticing that a few years ago a huge number of boards suddenly got one woman on them. No matter how able that woman might have been, the "mates" culture you describe would have made it impossible for that woman to be effective. Lets agree that all token (female, males, mates or anything else) shouldn't be there...or anywhere. I don't think you obtain the benefits of equality from a helicopter drop.
