Completely agree. I spent my career in IT too, and have little confidence in overall controls at any organisation. I check bank / trading accounts daily as well.
A better way is probably two-factor authentication. E.g. your mobile phone is your personal key. I feel safest when companies send a real time SMS msg to confirm any transaction. BUT what do you do if someone steals your phone???
This problem will get a lot worse before it gets better.
