One doesn't really need to understand what any union wants, as it's usually just a very narrow interest of a few few of their privileged mates, or a grand standing that has nothing to do with their work. Most of offshore workers indeed work hard (unlike e.g. their stevedore mobster mates) and are not that easy to replace - but they work on ~ $200k p.a. for 2-week fifo shift cycles.
Giving up easily to union demands now, would mean that the next time they bark, WDS share price will drop.
WDS price is holding this well because union is not (and should not) controlling the situation, and they will need to compromise.
