As someone that visits a number of coal mines. Attitude and performance of unionised workforces can be very poor because they feel so empowered and protected by the union.
Mines used to employ multiples of the workforce they currently employ. Because unions made conditions so unreasonably good for everyone inside it that mines started to hire everyone as contractors. The industry is a bit of a 2 tiered system.
