About 20 traditional owners are being trained at the One Arm Point community to work on an offshore iron ore exploration project.
Pluton Resources has enlisted the help of Kimberley TAFE to train 18 men to work at its Irvine Island site.
The chairman of the One Arm Point community, Andrew Carter, hopes it will inspire the men to look for work outside the Commonwealth's Indigenous work for welfare scheme.
"Time will tell if they hold out and I think it's good for them to ... get out, not being stuck in the communities for all their life and there's a bigger world out there to work from," he said.
