One thing I didn’t realize, that was probably obvious to most other people, is the huge barrier the company will face in getting patients to accept the fact that the treatment uses pig cells.
People seem to be a lot more comfortable with the idea of injecting stem cells obtained from an aborted human foetus rather than from a pig. Reading the social media comments related to several of the mainstream articles published this week the vast majority dismissed / were against this treatment because it involved the use of pig cells without understanding the technology or process behind this technique.
Of course these comments might have just been the voice of the noisy minority but it highlights the need for the company to educate potential patients to allow them to get past the ethical issues / social taboo of using animal cells in these types of treatments.
