Newsflash – Archaeologists Discover Function of Ancient Antikythera Mechanism
Athens: after over a century of research, the function of the Antikythera Mechanism, which was found in 1902 by divers in the Mediterranean near the Greek island of Antikythera, has finally been revealed.
The complex bronze clockwork mechanism, a testament to the ingenuity of the antique world, has been dated to around 100 BC and has puzzled scientists until today.
Now it has finally been revealed that the device is actually a mechanism for issuing suspensions from trading for shares and goods traded on an exchange or other market.
When the device was first brought to the surface and examined, the three alphabetic dials on the front were found to be aligned to show the letters ΒΥΔ, while the numerical dials on the back showed the numbers 2, 0, 1 and 8.
It appears that the researchers have unwittingly set the machine in motion during their investigation and that, once started, the device cannot be stopped and will keep issuing suspensions until it has run out of power, with double suspensions likely to be issued around the vernal equinox in the northern hemisphere or the autumnal equinox south of the equator. At this stage, scientists are unable to predict precisely when the device might stop running, but estimates range between 100 and 200 years from now.
Hope you enjoyed this little yarn, sorry I haven't got any real news, Happy Easter everybody!
