Hanson's bid for state or national office is to get the Australian Electoral Commission's $2.10 per-vote subsidy.
Payments ($46.5 million in the 2007 federal election) are calculated using an indexed sum per first preference vote. In order to obtain election funding a candidate must obtain at least 4% of the first preference vote.
The major parties spend millions on TV and newspaper ads. But Hanson is a media magnet who has to spend $0 on ads. The first hint that she's standing for office and TV news crews rush to interview her. And TV and radio show hosts flock to invite her to babble on, giving her more free publicity, so she can spend taxpayers cash upgrading her spacious Queensland homestead:
