Exxon Mobil [NYSE:XOM] says it has developed a new lithium-ion battery that will improve the efficiency and affordability of electric and hybrid vehicles.

The company is working with Japanese firm Tonen Chemical to develop new technology that will allow the battery - which is normally used in cell phones and computers - to be used in automobiles. The most popular hybrid cars currently use nickel-metal hydride batteries.

Exxon is expected to present the new battery and technology at the Electric Vehicle Symposium and Exposition in Anaheim, Calif., next week.
