    Hi Blazw

At the Brisbane Expo recently (links on this thread from Mitch somewhere) Bruce showed slides of one of the dunes a few years after a bushfire that removed all the living stuff from the sand. The place was back to normal.

Basically, sand extraction removes the sand and then leaves the sand at the bottom of the dune where it meets the water table if I have understood correctly. The extraction causes no pollution and so the scrub just grows back as soon as you leave the place undisturbed. I guess it could become marshland rather than dry sand dune so the mix might not be identical to the place before mining, but it will be natural and at virtually no cost or even actually at no cost. No tailings or other problems - any sand that is not sufficient quality to sell (if there is any) gets spread back out after the god stuff is gone.
    Cheers,

    Keith.
